The display above will show the overall route if the image exists. The calendar portion provides three pieces of information.
First is a state or province flag and indicates where the trip started that day. So seeing the Colorado state flag indicates that the day started in Colorado.
Second is a link to the blog posting if it exists. The blog posting is a detailed trip report and will select some of the pictures for the day to emphasize events or just to show interesting pictures.
Third is a link to the picture gallery for the day. The gallery shows every picture taken that day. The gallery attempts to read each image and sort the pictures in the order they were taken but if I forget to set the date and time on the camera, the images will all show before images that do have the date and time set.
